The tech giant has just shut down one of its biggest manufacturing partners just after it found out it went against its labor rules concerning student workers. The company has always been against misclassified workers who work are forced to work night shifts and overtime. It doesn’t just make sense because most of the turn to be single parents finding it hard to pay bills and take care of their all at the same time.
Apple has already said that Pegatron is now on probation until such time that it can get its house in order. Workers are also said to have lived in substandard dormitories as well as working significantly longer hours than was claimed. This also affects the student’s workers amongst them facing the fact that they have to deal with school.
Apple often offers it contracts of all its manufacturing out to third-parties but is still held accountable for the ethical standards used. The company worst mistake for third-party is with Hon Hai Precision Industry, or Foxconn, where a lot of employees died by suicide because of the way they were created. In 2017, Foxconn was found to have made high school students work 11-hour days building the iPhone X, or else they wouldn’t graduate.
In 2018, Catcher Technology was reported to force employees to stand for 10 hours a day in a toxic environment without any PPE. That included workers who were standing close to 80-decibel handed earplugs and exposed to metallic particles without any googles. All this has been going on for years without the company’s awareness.
Pegatron has said that it has fired the manager responsible and Apple said that it hadn’t found evidence of forced labor. Well, they have promised to address the issue and compensate the workers who were affected.
