This year, the Canadian Nurses Foundation is looking to award more than $100,000 in scholarships to exceptional nursing students across Canada, so it’s worth applying if you’re eligible!
What are CNF scholarships?
The Canadian Nurses Foundation (CNF) awards scholarships to registered nurses (RNs) across Canada who are committed to continuing their education and providing quality nursing care.
Scholarships can be used towards any program of study at a post-secondary institution in Canada, or towards tuition fees while on practicum or clinical placements within approved teaching settings.
New and eligible returning scholarship recipients may receive up to $20,000 per year ($10,000/semester).
To ensure that only high-quality candidates are selected, an independent peer review committee evaluates applications against clearly defined selection criteria.
Since 1988, more than 2,700 scholarships have been awarded totaling over $22 million in awards.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible to apply for CNF scholarships, applicants must be: full-time students enrolled in an undergraduate program at a registered nurse (RN) program or recognized graduate nurse program; and citizens or permanent residents of Canada. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate outstanding academic merit and leadership potential.
Demonstrated financial need is also required. Preference will be given to those applicants who are Aboriginal, African Nova Scotian, or LGBTQ+. Applications received between January 1st and February 28th will receive first consideration.
Financial assistance may only be used toward fees assessed by your institution and associated with a nursing program at an accredited university; awards cannot be used toward living expenses, travel costs, or any other costs not directly related to your nursing education.
The Application Process
To apply for a CNF scholarship, you must be enrolled as a full-time nursing student in your final year of study, or have graduated within six months of applying. Scholarship winners are notified in late fall.
Any questions regarding application processes can be directed to eph.
The CNF is comprised of 23 provincial and territorial nurses’ associations. Each association selects its own recipients from candidates who reside in their respective provinces or territories.

Tips to help you succeed
Your university’s awards department can be a great resource when applying for scholarships, and they’ll have information on deadlines, appropriate forms and processes that are specific to your school.
When filling out an application form, make sure you read it thoroughly and highlight any parts you might need help with from your faculty advisor or other faculty members.
If a scholarship is worth several thousand dollars or more, it may be a good idea to hire a professional resume-writing service to craft your submission.
Of course, there are thousands of scholarships available each year—and even more free applications—so don’t give up if you don’t get accepted right away.
Remember: just because you weren’t selected doesn’t mean you didn’t come close! Keep in mind that some organizations accept late applications, so check back often as deadlines approach.
Be sure to follow up after submitting your application; sometimes additional documents or clarification is required before a decision can be made. Good luck.
