Twitter recently gave out details about the hack which went global, it is said to be a huge scam effort set to get bitcoin from users to a random cryptocurrency wallet. It was accomplished by targeting some of the highest-profile accounts on the social media network, such as those belonging to Elon Musk, Kanye West, Joe Biden, Barrack Obama, Jeff Bezos, and Bill Gates.
Not only did the hackers ask for bitcoin for the hacked accounts, but they also managed to get their hands-on account information including direct messages for up to eight of the 130 accounts targeted.
Twitter also added that it won’t be a recurring activity because it does mean that we will suddenly see any of Kanye’s accounts or any of the other high-profile folk targeted, direct messages pop up online as a result of this hack.
These are verified accounts that were unidentified by the company. The company also added “This is a tool that is meant to provide an account owner with a summary of their Twitter account details and activity. We are reaching out directly to any account owner where we know this to be true. None of the eight were verified accounts.”
However, the company promised to limit the details it shared on its actions to address the incident at the moment. An attack like this is especially alarming considering the vital role Twitter plays for political discussion months before the U.S. presidential election. A hacker can take over a president’s account and make a false declaration of war.
Obviously, this has shown that no matter how you think your life on social media is protected, it can also be ruined. Logging into your account on different devices is not really advisable.
“We are deliberately limiting the detail we share on our remediation steps at this time to protect their effectiveness and will provide more technical details, where possible, in the future,” Twitter wrote.
It was explained how the hack happened. Twitter explained that the hackers pointed their target on the employees using social engineering or by manipulating the employees into carrying out certain actions and revealing confidential data. The hack which generated about $120,000 worth of donation to the wallets has definitely set off alarm bells.
Nevertheless, the company knows that this is obviously not good and is embarrassed and really sorry.
