To find out, we spoke with two foreigners who recently landed factory jobs here in the US. Both of them had to go through an extensive interview process before they were accepted, and both of them say it was worth it.
The first foreigner, Tanya, came to the US on a student visa. A few years later, she decided to get a job and started looking online. She found an ad for a factory job in Texas but wasn’t sure if she should apply. So she emailed the company for information about the interview process.
“They replied back within a day and said that I needed to submit my resume, have my passport verified, and have my transcripts sent over,” Tanya recalls. “After that, I didn’t hear anything for about a month.”
But when she contacted the company again, they told her that her application had been approved and that she would need to come down for an interview.
“I flew down there and had a really great interview,” she says. “They offered me the job and I accepted it.”The company gave her a one-year trial period, and Tanya has been working at Springboard ever since. She loves her job managing the daycare center, where she provides care for a dozen or so children each day, as well as attending to the needs of their parents when they come to pick them up.”You get to see all the different people that come through here,” she says. “Many of them are down on their luck and have horrible situations but my job gives me an opportunity for a better life for myself and my family.”Springboard’s owner and CEO, Amnon Steverman, says he was initially drawn to Tanya because he thought she would be willing to take on any kind of new challenge: “I wanted to find someone as opposed to hiring staff. “Seth Cohen, Springboard’s CFO, says Tanya is the kind of person who believes in always looking for ways to improve. “She is a team player and if there’s anything she can do to help our company be more efficient she will go that extra mile.”Cohen says that although he didn’t know her prior to Springboard, he would have hired her anyway because when you meet Tanya for the first time she immediately makes an impression: “She was very enthusiastic about everything and knew how much work I had ahead of me. She wasn’t timid at all.”When asked what it takes to get the job done, Steverman has little hesitation: ” A positive attitude, great organizational skills, and a work ethic that blows everybody else out of the water.”
