How long does a refund take on PayPal? – If you have changed your mind on a purchase or you made a mistake, PayPal gives you the access to cancel the payment or ask your seller or merchant for a refund. If it happens that you are unhappy with your purchase or you have not yet received it, you can also communicate directly with your seller using the PayPal Resolution Center.
Understand that when it comes to refunding, how and when your money is refunded depends on how you made the original payment. You can easily check the status of your refund at any time, by simply logging in to your account. All refunds are sent back to the payment method of your original payment. Money should be refunded in the currency you originally selected. In case PayPal is unable to refund you in the original currency, or your primary currency, you’ll be refunded in US dollars (USD).
What Does Refund Status Mean?
While trying to check your refund status on PayPal, you will come across some terms. Here’s what they actually mean:
Pending – This means your refund has been issued, but the bank is still processing it. It usually takes 3 to 5 business days for the money to arrive.
Refunded or partially refunded – This means your refund is complete. As such, the money should be back in your PayPal balance or on your credit or debit card.
Temporary hold – This means that your refund was sent before your original payment cleared your bank. This normally takes 3 to 5 business days to process and the refund will be credited to your PayPal balance once it’s complete.
Completed – When you see this status, it means your refund has been sent and completed on the seller or recipient’s side. However, you still may not see the payment in your PayPal available balance. It may take an additional 3 to 5 business days to process, even if it’s marked as “Completed”.
How Long Does a Refund Take on PayPal?
As earlier stated, you have to understand that when it comes to refunding, how and when your money is refunded depends on how you made the original payment. You can easily check the status of your refund at any time, by simply logging in to your account.
So here we are going to show you the different payment mediums and how long their refund takes:
Credit Card (including PayPal credit)
If you made your payment using a credit card including a PayPal credit card, your refund will go to your credit card. The refund may take up to 30 days for the refund amount to appear on your card statement. If it happened that the card was canceled or you paid with a prepaid card, you can contact the card issuer to access your refund. The money will still be sent to this card account.
Bank account
If you pay using your bank account, your refund will initially go back to the PayPal balance before being auto swept back to the original funding source (bank). But note that it may take up to 5 business days for the refund amount to appear on your bank account. If a refund is issued shortly after you paid, PayPal will try to cancel the transaction so that you are never charged. Where PayPal is unable to cancel the transaction, the refund will be processed and sent to your bank account.
PayPal balance – If you use your PayPal balance, your refund goes to your balance on the same day the refund was processed.
PayPal balance and your credit card
With PayPal balance and your credit card, your refund will go to both your balance and credit card. The refund to your balance happens the same day it’s processed while the refund to the card may take up to 30 days.
Debit card
If you used a debit card, your refund will go to your debit card. However, it may take up to 30 days for the refund amount to appear on your card statement. In a situation where the refund can’t be applied to your debit card, it’ll be sent to your PayPal account.
In case you don’t have a PayPal Balance account and you get a refund for a payment sent with a bank account; you’ll have two options:
