The zoom meeting app is among the most popularly used apps for online meetings as it covers both audio and video features. In the last couple of months, the usage of the app has experienced a rise following the increased need for people to communicate and for businesses to hold their official meetings in the advent of the lockdown ensuing from the global pandemic.

How To Mute Or Unmute On Zoom - Whether You’re A Host Or A Participant

The mute feature on the app is one that is necessary to prevent cluster and interference during audio or video meetings. Without the mute feature, background noises from the participants would definitely cause the meeting to be noisy. This article explains how you can mute or unmute during zoom meetings when you’re the host, or you’re a participant.

Table of Contents
  • Unmute or Mute as a Host
  • Mute or Unmute as a Participant

Unmute or Mute as a Host

As a host on the Zoom meeting app, you have the ability to mute and unmute whomever you choose, or all participants on your zoom meeting.

  • Mute or Unmute your mic – To mute your mic, simply tap on the microphone icon at the bottom of the screen during the meeting to turn off your mic. The microphone icon would display red when it’s turned off. To Unmute your mic during a zoom meeting, tap on the microphone icon at the bottom of the screen and it would turn back to displaying white, indicating that it’s unmuted and you’re transmitting audio.

Mute or Unmute a Participant – To mute a participant, tap on the icon where you have the list of participants and tap on the participant’s name. Select “Mute Audio” from the options and that person’s mic would be muted. You can choose to unmute them by also tapping on their name and choosing “Unmute Audio” from the options.

Mute Participants on Entry – You can mute all participants on entry, so when they log into the meeting, it won’t cause a distraction during the meeting. To do this, go to your meeting settings and tap on the toggle for “Mute on Entry”. If you want to change this setting, you can go back and turn off the toggle to Unmute.

Mute and Unmute all Participants during a meeting – To mute all participants during a zoom meeting, tap on the icon where you have the list of participants. At the bottom of the screen, select “Mute All”. After selecting this, you can check the box for “Allow participants unmute themselves” in the pop-up, then tap “Mute All”. To unmute your participants after this, go back to the bottom of the screen and select “Unmute All”.

Mute or Unmute as a Participant

As much as it is important to know how to mute your mic when you’re a participant in a meeting on zoom, you also need to know how to unmute because, at some point in the meeting, you may be needed to make a contribution, so what do you do when your mic is Muted and you need to speak?. While explaining how you can mute your mic on zoom, we would also touch on how to unmute your mic.

There are about 3 ways to Mute your mic on zoom.

  • Before you join a meeting – First open your zoom meeting app and tap on “Join”, under the Join options, tap on the toggle for “Don’t connect to audio”, this would make sure that when you join the meeting, your mic would be automatically mute. To turn this off, simply turn off the toggle.
  • Always Muted – To take the setting a bit further to ensure you’re always muted in meetings, go to “settings” in the zoom meeting app and tap on the toggle for “Always mute my microphone”. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend turning on this setting, just so you don’t have a challenge unmuting your mic when needed.
  • During a meeting – This is the easiest and recommended way to mute your mic on zoom. To do this, simply tap on the microphone icon at the bottom of the screen during the meeting to turn off your mic. The microphone icon would display red when it’s turned off.

To Unmute your mic during a zoom meeting, tap on the microphone icon at the bottom of the screen and it would turn back to displaying white, indicating that it’s unmuted and you’re transmitting audio.
