IKEA is a Swedish group of companies founded in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad. Although its origin is Swedish, it is also a multinational as well. They are well known for their simple to exotic ready-to-assemble furniture designs as well as domestic appliances. - Your Primer – choose one that’s specifically for laminate surfaces (Consider using shellac-based primers and avoid using water-based or oil-based primers, especially water-based)
- Spray-on Adhesive promoter (it’s what helps your primer sit on the laminate)
- Sealer
- Paint trays
- Paint Roller (a smooth one)
- Tack cloth
- Paint Brush
First disassemble the furniture into smaller parts, good thing IKEA furniture already come in a disassembled form. First, use your spray-on adhesive promoter, this is a secret ingredient that will make a great difference.
Next, apply your primer using your paintbrush and ensure to cover the surface completely. After the primer is dry, still check for bare surfaces to coat as well, this will ensure total coverage. After you’re sure that the surface is completely primed, you can then apply your paint.
You can either use liquid or spray paint. If you’re using spray paint, you would have to pay extra attention to get a uniform finish. For your liquid paint, you would have to do a light first layer with your paint roller and then another layer for complete coverage.

After the paint coating dries off, you can then apply your sealer. You can choose the type of sealer you want to use however ensure that the color of your sealer matches the color of your paint. You can use a spray acrylic sealer for a small piece of furniture, or Polyacrylic sealer for larger pieces. Remember to always allow the furniture to be completely dry before reassembling.
How To Paint On Solid Wood IKEA
What you would need are
- Your Paint (Oil Paints usually create a relatively better look when applied to wood surfaces)
- Oil based Primers
- Sealer
- Paint roller
- Paint trays
- Sanding block
- Tack cloth
You start by disassembling your furniture into smaller parts. Sand the surface of the furniture until it feels smooth, and wipe thoroughly until its particle-free, after sanding. This will give you a smoother and neater appearance.
Apply your primer using your paintbrush and ensure to cover the surface completely. After the primer dries, sand the surface once more, actually sand in between every coating, sand the surface to give a perfect finish.
Apply your paint. You can also use spray paint; it basically depends on the texture you want to achieve. However, if you’re using oil paint, you have to use a smaller brush for the edges to ensure everywhere is covered. Use your paint roller on the surface to leave a smooth surface. After your paint dries off, you can apply your sealer. Also, remember to allow the furniture to be completely dry before reassembling.
Note that these tips can also be used for other furniture that are not from IKEA.
