Samsung is among the leading phone brands around the world, with its high-tech mobile devices. When it comes to Android specs, they leave their counterparts some good miles away. The Samsung Galaxy S9 is quite a package and it comes with the proximity sensor which is common in recently manufactured mobile devices. Just in case you don’t know already, the proximity sensor is a sensor device installed by the phone manufacturer to allow the device to sense the presence of objects around the screen of the device, whether in contact or close to the screen.
The effect of this sensor is created to help prevent your phone from involuntarily dialing a number when the screen is on and it’s in your pocket or when it’s leaning against a surface. The proximity sensor also secondarily helps you save your battery among other advantages it was built to offer. However, it could sometimes involuntarily interfere with your normal activities on your phone especially if your device starts to malfunction. In such a case among other reasons, you may need to turn it off. This is how to go about it if you need to turn off your proximity sensor.

Go to your App screen and tap on your dialer app (the app you use to make calls). Next tap on the vertical ellipsis on the top right part of your screen. Tap on “Call Setting” among the options. Tap on “Turn off screen during calls” to now deactivate the setting.
These steps mentioned above are effective on other Samsung devices, if these steps above don’t work for you or you can’t find the “Turn off screen during calls” in your call settings, it means that the proximity sensor on your device is designed to automatically adjust at times when it is required or necessary.
What Happens When You Turn Off Your Proximity Sensor
- YOU SAVE LESS POWER – The proximity sensor is designed to prevent your device from consuming power from your display screen unnecessarily. Since its function is automatic, it gets to turn off the display light on the screen when necessary for example during phone calls.
- YOUR DIAL PAD IS EXPOSED – One of the most important functions of the proximity sensor is to turn off the display light and prevent any involuntary dialing while your ear is pressed against your screen during a call. However, if you turn off your proximity sensor, you could easily dial another contact or end a call involuntarily while your phone screen is pressed against your ear during a call.
