The airline was founded following the dissolution of the first East African Community and the subsequent demise of East African Airways, and up until April 1996, the Kenyan government owned 100 percent of the company.

The airline started trading on the Nairobi Stock Exchange in 1996 after shares were made available to the general public. The business cross-listed its shares on the Dar-es-Salaam Stock Exchange in October 2004.
Kenya Airways Cargo was reinstated by the firm as a brand in April 2004, and in July 2004, the company’s domestic subsidiary Flamingo Airlines was re-absorbed.
For the seventh time in seven years, Kenya Airways received the “African Airline of the Year” Award in March 2006. The second-largest airline alliance in the world, SkyTeam, welcomed Kenya Airways as one of the inaugural SkyTeam Associate Airlines on September 4, 2007.
Paul Kasimu, the director, was named Manager of the Year in 2008, and the company won the Company of the Year award for strategic planning and emergency readiness.
According to Travel News & Lifestyle Magazine, Msafiri is the greatest in-flight publication, Flying Blue is the best frequent flyer program, and Kenya Airways is the best regional airline and African airline of choice.

Kenya Airways fleet consists of the following aircraft: Boeing 737-300 (4), Boeing 737-700 (4), Boeing 737-800 (5), Boeing 767-300ER (5), Boeing 777-200ER (4), Boeing 787-8 (9 orders), and Embraer 170LR (3), all of which are used for short-haul regional flights, long-haul international flights, and intercontinental flights, respectively.
Kenya Airways became the first airline in sub-Saharan Africa to receive the demanding IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit) accreditation in 2005.
KLM, Air France, Precision Air (a privately owned Tanzanian airline), Northwest Airlines (the United States), Kenya Airways and Rwanda Air on the Kigali-Nairobi-Kigali route, and Kenya Airways and Korean Air on the Nairobi-Seoul route are among the airlines with which it has code-sharing agreements.
Services and Products
The primary operation of the group is to provide air transportation for passengers and freight on an international, regional, and domestic level. Additionally, it handles import and export goods as well as offers ground handling services to other airlines.
The company runs internal flights and flies to 42 locations across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. At the end of March 2008, the group had 24 aircraft that were either owned or leased for use.
