Summer Job Netflix first Italian reality series, features a ton of pretentious young adults in swimming suits who profess to detest working and love to party.
When they realize they were duped into traveling to Mexico and forced to work summer jobs to pay for it, they are devastated—that is, until they learn they could win 100,000 euros if they actually put some effort into their new employment.
The participants’ improvement and true hilarity stop the show from sounding formulaic.

Is it Better to STREAM IT Or SKIP IT?
Opening Image: As host Matilde Gioli declares, “A dream vacation,” we pan across a scene of the Mexican Riviera, with its sapphire-blue waters and sunny skies.
We all desire it, plan for it, and wait months for it,” she continued, before revealing that back in her day, she had to work summer jobs in order to afford a lovely holiday like this.
The Gist: Ten young (and, Gioli adds, “lazy, spoilt”) Italians who have never worked a day in their lives believe they are going to enjoy a fantastic, cost-free trip to Mexico. They’re utterly mistaken.
The cast believes they have signed up for a show called Summer Fever in which they will receive a complimentary tropical getaway.
It’s unclear what they actually believe the premise to be; perhaps they simply believe they are housemates on a reality program in the Real World vein? Another 20-year-old girl claims she has spent the previous two years of her life “on sabbatical,” while one man said he is only in town for the sea and the pussies.

Another, Pietro, introduces himself as Dorian Gray, a Michelangelo cherub, and a wanderer over the course of his speech.
He appears to be in an MGMT cover band and is inadvertently funny because of his open-to-the-navel sweater vest. I sincerely hope he doesn’t end up becoming some sort of men’s rights advocate.
Our Opinion: I frequently proceed cautiously when watching these reality shows set on tropical islands because the casts are frequently drawn directly from the central reality show casting: self-obsessed party animals who drink, hook up, and are generally entertaining but are predictable when it comes to providing good reality show drama.
While I have nothing against this type, it can be exhausting.The voiceovers that repeatedly remind us that the participants are lazy and don’t know what’s coming to them (work! work is what they have coming to them!) could have made Summer Job tiresome.

But the jobs they’re given—at a restaurant, a dive shop, and a monkey sanctuary—are full of ingenious, amusing opportunities. Additionally, the show ensures that all of the employers who are employing these sophisticates are strict and unyielding to their BS.
It may be frustrating to watch the show and see young adults who are so unprepared and unwilling to work, but that’s what makes the show work.
Over the course of its eight episodes, some of the contestants do change, and by the time the grand finale comes around, the show has a redemptive and, dare I say, uplifting quality.
It’s time to STREAM IT. This reality show’s hook, which differs from those of many others in that it has nothing to do with romance or relationships, is already rather novel and intriguing.
The cast is largely made of the same stuff as many traditional reality contestants, but they are genuinely funny, making it easy to laugh along with them (while occasionally laughing at them), and they end up breaking out of that mold as they grow and change throughout the course of the program.
Pop culture author Liz Kocan resides in Massachusetts. The time she won on the game show Chain Reaction is her biggest claim to fame.
