The company has once again flagged and hidden one of President Trump’s tweets, this time “for making misleading health claims that could potentially dissuade people from participation in voting.” Written in the tweet on Monday, Trump said that mail (voter) drop boxers – used another routine to the US Postal Services (USPS) – are “not COVID sanitized ” and a “voter security disaster” that could result to fraud.
Twitter said the tweet goes against its “suppression and intimidation” rules on voting by making “misleading claims about process procedures or techniques which could dissuade people from participating.” As with Trump’s looting post, the company said it allowed the tweet to remain on the site “given its relevance to the ongoing public conversation.” However, it’s limiting engagement, allowing users to retweet with a comment but not like, reply or retweet it.
Mail-in or drop-box voter fraud is very rare because of system checks and balances, according to the “Brennan center for justice.” However, there’s a big partisan gap in such voting, as 48% of Democrats compared to 27% of Republicans said they intend to vote that way (Trump himself voted by mail in the Republican primary elections).
While fraud might be rare, mail-in ballot delays could be a huge problem. During the Republican and Democrat primaries, over 550,000 mail-in ballots were rejected, compared to 319,000 during the 2016 general election. A huge amount of those ballots were refused because they were late.
Well, Twitter has placed warnings on Trump’s tweets about voting before, but hiding one is a more noticeable action that will definitely draw the attention of the President. After he was fact-checked for a false tweet and manipulated media earlier this year, the President signed an executive order designed to limit protections for social media companies.
