Twitter’s intention changed the way its retweet button worked due to a called experiment right before the election. Unlike the original reshare method, you have included an additional context before you can reshare. This made users add thoughts of their own in the quote tweet format. That made it slower to make use of and a lot of users lost interest because they have no interest whatsoever in adding a text before retweeting.
Now the experiment has come to an end, and the company has restored the buttons to its default functionality, stating “The increase in Quote Tweets was also offset by an overall 20 percent decrease in sharing through both Retweets and Quote Tweets.” At first, when the change was made, many users didn’t understand that a regular old retweet was still possible.
Twitter says it will “continue to focus on encouraging more thoughtful amplification,” such as its feature that reminds people to read the article before they have access to a tweet. According to the company, they have been successful.
