Artificial Intelligence Scholarship at Ulster University
It may come as a surprise to many that artificial intelligence scholarship is thriving in Northern Ireland, with some of its foremost scholars coming from Ulster University. Professor Stefan Hyx is one such scholar, working within UU’s School of Computing and Information Technology in Coleraine.
Hyx has played a key role in developing two leading AI research labs at Ulster: Knowledge Engineering and Robotics (KER) and Cognitive Systems & Interaction (CSI).
The KER lab explores knowledge representation; reasoning; planning; and execution, while CSI works on subjects such as computer vision, language processing, human-computer interaction, machine learning, and natural language understanding.
Both labs have attracted significant external funding from both UK and international sources, and are involved in collaborations with a wide range of local and global companies.
