Amazon sent a memorandum to employees, telling them to delete the world-known app TikTok form their phones and other gadgets. Few hours after the memo was dispatched, the company’s’ press office said to the public that it was sent in error without providing any further explanation to the masses.
In the email sent to the employees, Amazon’s IT department said the poses a threat to the company but it didn’t provide specifics on what they meant by that. Workers were told to delete the app to be able to remove the keep track of their work email. Employees were given access to TikTok from a browser on their laptop according to the email, titled “Action required: Mandatory removal of TikTok by 10-Jul,” which CNET reviewed.
While Amazon’s call to ban TikTok was vague, it wasn’t out of the blue. TikTok, owned by a Chinese tech company has been forced to answer some questions thrown to them by the masses and organization for being a spying app. For security reasons, India banned TikTok while the US and Australia are close to considering shutting the app for good.
The Amazon memo in a state of chaos, regardless of all that, TikTok sent out its own statement before Amazon backtracked on the ban. “User security is of the utmost importance to TikTok — we are fully committed to respecting the privacy of our users,” a TikTok spokesperson said in a statement. The company is also concerned why Amazon did not communicate with them before sending their email, “We are welcome to dialogue so we sort out whatever thing that might have caused Amazon to send out that email and enable their team to continue participating in our community.
In December, the US Army banned TikTok from its phones, and in March, US senators proposed a deal that will block TikTok from all government devices. French security researchers said they have analyzed the app and while he sees privacy issues with how much data the social network takes from devices, its nothing unusual in the app ecosystem.
The process is still close supervision at this time, they do collect analytic data like other apps, but they show any indicators of siphoning anything or pose a threat.
