YouTube has decided to monetize videos from channels that aren’t capable of a part of its Partner Program and this is due to an update in its terms of service. Don’t get your hopes up as creators to start getting paid from their videos immediately. It won’t be shocking if we see ads on video pop-ups created by smaller YouTube creators.
You are required as a creator who wants to be a part of the Partner Program to have at least 4,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months and has to have over 1,000 subscribers. YouTube only used to run ads on videos from channels that aren’t capable of meeting those criteria under special circumstances. In as much as it meets ad-friendly guidelines, the website can monetize any video.
What the company is saying it won’t promote any videos that contain inappropriate contents that contain inflammatory and sexual content, drug-related and firearm-related content, unwanted languages, or anything that has to do with hatred against people with different religion, sexuality, and gender identity.
YouTube is launching these changes first in the US, but it will be effective globally by the end of 2021. The website never allowed the collection of personally identifiable information, but it already changed its language in the ToS just for users to understand what kind of data users can’t collect.
